Munch Pairing Dinner

Munch, is an ongoing, monthly cuisine and cocktail pairing dinner held at Oahu’s chic Apartment 3 ultra-lounge. For the final Munch of 2010, executive chef James Lewis and local Master Mixologist, Joey Gottesman of Better Brands Hawaii collaborated to bring foodie and cocktail enthusiasts alike a tasty three-course meal and trio of cocktails highlighting the spirit- gin.
Gin is definitely in (i.e. gin is to cocktail culture as skinny jeans are to fashion) and if you haven’t tasted the sprinkled with juniper spirit, it adds a light flavoring to many universal cocktail faves like the perfect martini, tart gimlet or refreshing Tom Collins. The stylish and intimate Munch dinner parties always provide patrons an up-close opportunity to learn a whole lot about the inspirational spirit of the night. And, this Munch was no different with the highly knowledgeable Gottesman as host who made sure that guests left with a slew of spirited scoop. If patrons weren’t gin drinkers before, most of them were converted by the evenings end.
Course one consisted of a golden beet and watercress salad with goat cheese and spiced pistachios. This was paired with the Golden Orange Fizz, a blend of Bombay Sapphire, fresh orange rind, organic egg, powdered sugar, fresh squeezed lemon juice and nutmeg. The light, citrusy flavors and contrasting spicy notes were contained in both the plate and the pour making this a crowd favorite and ultimate introduction.
Next was the proscuitto-wrapped salmon filet with Kabocha pumpkin puree and sautéed rainbow chard. This was coupled with a fresh basil and cayenne pepper elixir, a concoction mixed with Heindricks Gin, fresh-island grown basil, fresh lime and cayenne pepper.
The Munch meal wrapped on a sweet note with a Grapefruit Mousse aside fresh strawberries and mint. The treat was enjoyed with the Bathtub Gin and Mixed Berry Cocktail made with Grey Goose, juniper berries, red wine, fresh mixed berries and Brandy. It’s safe to say the final cocktail had some serious kick.
By the end of the three-course culinary and cocktail tour guests palates were pleasantly satisfied, certainly solidifying a future fan base for Munch events in 2011.
After a brief hiatus for the holiday season, Munch will return on January 27th, 2011.
